Why Does My Toilet Clog So Easily?
If one toilet clogs at the drop of a hat, the cause is usually the fixture, what's going down it, or the line behind it. Here's how to tell which.
If you’ve got one toilet that seems to clog if you look at it wrong, the cause is almost always one of three things: what’s going down it, the toilet itself, or the line behind it.
What’s going down it
The big one: wipes and hygiene products. Even “flushable” wipes don’t break down like toilet paper, and they’re one of the most common things we pull out of clogged toilets and lines. Paper towels, feminine products, and “just a little too much” toilet paper all pile up too. The fix here is free — trash can, not toilet.
The toilet itself
Some low-flow and builder-grade toilets simply don’t generate enough flush to clear the bowl and trap reliably. This is extremely common, and no amount of clearing changes a fixture’s basic design. If one specific toilet is the repeat offender while others are fine, the fixture is a prime suspect — and sometimes the honest answer is that a better toilet solves a problem you’ve been plunging for years.
The line behind it
If the toilet clogs and you hear gurgling or see slow drainage in the tub or shower, the issue may not be the toilet at all — it could be a partial main line blockage showing up at the lowest, weakest point.
What to do
Try a good plunger first. But if one toilet clogs constantly, call us and tell us which one and how often — we’ll help you figure out whether it’s habits, hardware, or the line, and fix the part that’s actually broken.
Common questions
Are 'flushable' wipes really the problem?
Often, yes. They don't break down like toilet paper and are one of the most common things we pull out of clogged toilets and lines. Even the ones marked flushable belong in the trash.
Could it be the toilet itself?
Definitely. Some low-flow and builder-grade toilets just don't move waste well, and no amount of clearing changes the design. Sometimes the honest fix is a better fixture — we'll tell you if that's what we're seeing.
