When Drain Cleaning Isn't Enough: Signs You Need a Repair
Cleaning fixes buildup. It can't fix a broken pipe. Here's how to tell the difference — and how a camera keeps any repair small and precise.
Most drain problems really are just clogs, and a good cleaning solves them. But sometimes the problem isn’t buildup — it’s damage, and no amount of cleaning fixes a pipe that’s broken, sagging, or collapsing. Knowing the difference keeps you from throwing money at the wrong solution.
Signs you’re dealing with damage, not a clog
- The line fails no matter how often it’s cleaned. A clog cleared properly stays cleared for a while. A line that backs up again almost immediately often has a structural cause.
- Wet or sunken spots in the yard. Sewage escaping a broken line shows up as soggy ground, greener grass, or a dip along the pipe’s path.
- Persistent sewage smell with no clear source.
- A camera inspection already showed a crack, separated joint, belly, or collapse.
Why looking first saves you money
Here’s the part homeowners appreciate: we don’t recommend digging we can’t show you. A camera and locator find the damage and mark its exact spot and depth, which usually turns what could be a torn-up yard into one small, precise dig. You see the problem on screen before any repair is discussed.
We handle the repair
As a licensed plumbing contractor, we don’t just diagnose and hand you off — we do the repair work: fixing broken and root-damaged sections, replacing failed clay and cast iron, and installing cleanouts that make future service faster. And if a job runs into something outside drain and sewer work, we’ll tell you straight.
If a drain keeps failing on you, call us. We’ll figure out together whether it’s a clog or something more — and if it’s more, you’ll see it before you spend a dollar on digging.
Common questions
How do I know it's damage and not just a clog?
The clearest sign is a line that keeps failing no matter how well it's cleaned, sometimes with wet or sunken spots in the yard or persistent smells. But the only way to know for sure is to look — a camera shows a break, separation, or collapse plainly.
Will I have to dig up my whole yard?
Usually not. Because we locate the exact spot and depth of the problem with the camera first, most repairs are targeted digs, not full-yard excavations. We'll show you where and explain the plan before anything starts.
Are you licensed for repairs?
Yes — G&R is a Florida Registered Plumbing Contractor, licensed and insured.
